44th District Information & Getting Help

A small town in the middle of a big city . . . a historic area that is in the midst of a modern revitalization . . . a community enriched by the cultural traditions of residents from around the world. The 44th District can be described in all these ways.

The district stretches from the Huntington Metro Station in the north to the northern boundary of Fort Belvoir in the south. The Richmond Highway corridor is one of the prime redevelopment sites in Northern Virginia – since 1985, more than $550 million of new investment has brought new businesses and new jobs to the area. More than 75,000 residents call this part of southeastern Fairfax County home.

The district includes some of our nation’s greatest historic treasures. Mount Vernon, home of our nation’s first President, and Woodlawn, a gift from George Washington to his nephew Major Lawrence Lewis and his wife Eleanor "Nelly" Custis, both lie within its boundaries. More than 1 million people visit these historic sites each year.

Natural beauty abounds. Residents use the bike path along the beautiful Potomac River for recreation, relaxation, and even for commuting by bicycle. Historic Huntley Meadows Park lies just south of the district.

The 44th District includes the following Fairfax County Public Schools: Belle View, Bucknell, Fort Hunt, Hybla Valley, Mount Vernon Woods, Riverside, Stratford Landing, Washington Mill, Waynewood, and Westgate Elementary Schools; Sandburg and Whitman Middle Schools; and Mount Vernon and West Potomac High Schools.

Getting Help

Help with State Agencies. It's often difficult to navigate government agencies. If you're having problems finding telephone numbers, reaching the right people, or getting straight answers, please call us. Our district office can provide help with the DMV, VDOT, Virginia Employment Commission, the Department of Social Services, and a host of other agencies. Additionally, we can help coordinate help from the Fairfax County offices and Supervisor Gerry Hyland.

Ideas for Legislation. Some of the best ideas come directly from members of the Mount Vernon community. I am always ready to listen to suggestions, and draft bills based on thoughtful public policy suggestions.

Community Events and Speaking Requests. To be an effective representative, I am constantly listening to the community. That means attending events, holding town hall meetings, walking door-to-door, and interacting with citizens. I would be happy to attend or speak at your community event or in your classroom as my schedule permits.

Visiting Richmond. Our capitol city is rich in history and the traditions of Virginia's government. Richmond is a fun city to visit, and the General Assembly offers fantastic tours and educational opportunities for people of all ages. Over the years, my office has arranged hundreds of visits to the area, and we would be happy to help in any way possible.
